Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Races This Week!

Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags

There is no doubt that a majority of the cars that you’ll see at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show could be deemed “trailer queens” or even works of art. We spotlight the best of the best and the rarest of the rare, and many are restored to Concours or as delivered when new condition, or they have been lovingly preserved. Huge investments and countless hours are devoted to restoring or preserving these cars, and we are honored to be able to be the gathering place for these great cars.

There are, however, some cars at MCACN that are used as they were originally intended to be. The guys and girls that participate in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Races are prime examples. Any one of these cars could easily snag some show trophies, (and many do!) yet they are launched on their original skinny bias ply tires, the gears are slammed and they blast through the lights at the end of the quarter mile. And each year in September, well over 100 people do exactly that. The PSMCDR event is taking place this week, kicking off Thursday. You will be able to see pristine LS6’s, Hemi’s, Cobra Jets and even supercharged Studebakers blast down the track. This is a lot like the old days, as everyone is there to have fun, sharing tools and tips, but there is a definite competitive spirit going on.

The most important rule: Your muscle car must be stock, except for the modifications outlined below. If a modification is not mentioned, keep it original! Remember, the goal is to have fun drag racing your muscle car. For 1955 to 1975 muscle cars built in United States and Canadian assembly plants with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles. Factory lightweight cars built for sanctioned drag racing and dealership-built/modified cars are not eligible to participate. Cars must be factory equipped with a minimum of four-barrel carburetion, dual exhaust, and other factory-installed equipment that promotes a high-performance intent and image. Cars are paired up based on time trial e.t.s and compete in a best-of-three heads-up shootout.

From the PSMCDR website; "Deviations to any of the rules are grounds for disqualification, unless backed up with authentic factory documentation. Refusal to be teched in any area is grounds for disqualification. If we suspect that you are using lightweight internal parts in your engine or elsewhere in the drivetrain, or we have any other issues with your car, you will be asked to tear down prior to the next year’s race for complete inspection. If you refuse to do so, you will be banned from the race until you do."

See old friends, make new ones, and enjoy all the cool cars on the track. Festivities kick off with check in and tech Thursday, with racing all day Friday and Saturday. For more info and the schedule, go to

So how does this tie in to MCACN? Well, again we will feature an all new group of an even dozen of these cars, along with a 13th on display in the lobby. Donny Brass, a longtime MCACN and PSMCDR participant, coordinates this display with help from Dan Jensen and the crew. And what a group you’ll see! Oldsmobile, Mopar, Buick, Ford, Chevy, Studebaker and of course Pontiac will all be in the group. Make a point of checking out this fun display and talk to the participants. There is no doubt that these folks know how to have fun, whether it is at the track this week or at our show in November!

Hotel Update; The DoubleTree O’Hare is now sold out, and the Embassy Suites O’Harestill has a few rooms available.  Not to worry, as we have plenty of rooms blocked for you at the Crowne Plaza O’Hare, the Hyatt Regency O’Hare and the aLoft. ALL of these hotels are offering special MCACN rates and extra perks for our participants and spectators, and all are conveniently located to the show, right in the middle of all the action and steps away from the Rosemont Entertainment District and the awesome 130 store outlet mall.

Looking for...My call out for specific cars for some of our special displays has been outstanding and I am checking off the boxes on my list. Thanks go out to those who responded and signed up. There are a few more I hope to find, so if you own a 1972 high performance Mopar, Ford or Mercury, especially a 340 Demon or Duster, or a HO 351 Mustang, please consider joining us for our Class of ‘72 Invitational. Would also like to add a few more Barn Finds & Hidden Gems to the mix, (no unfinished projects, just real Gems!) and of course, if you own one of the 1967 L/88’s and can join us, please let me know.

The Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals is the world’s largest all indoor specialty show devoted to Muscle Cars, Dealer-built Supercars and the finest and rarest Corvettes. We will again fill nearly 400,000 square feet of exhibit space in the beautiful Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, (suburban Chicago), Illinois, just minutes from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. We work hard all year long to bring you the best and freshest show in the nation and look forward to having you join us whether you are showing a car, showcasing your automotive products or services or as an all important spectator. Plan on joining is Saturday, November 18, and Sunday, November 19 and be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

We would also like to extend our thoughts and prayers to

everyone affected by the adverse weather conditions.
