One of the other hats I wear is working with the prestigious Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John, (formerly Meadowbrook Concours) here in the Detroit area. This is without a doubt one of the absolute most prestigious Concours events in the world, right up there with Pebble Beach and Amelia Island, and I am honored to be a part of the team that puts this event together. I am a member of the Vehicle Selection Committee and this year, I am coordinating four categories.
Of course, one is American Muscle, and we are featuring ALL “Aero Cars” with a fine group of Charger 500’s and Daytona’s, Ford Talladega’s, Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II's and of course, Plymouth Superbirds. This group will have representation of ALL engine offerings for the Mopars, meaning 440-4 barrel, 440-6-barrel and of course, the fabled Hemi. Among this group of invited enthusiasts are several MCACN Sponsors. Tim Wellborn of the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum will be joining us with his incredible 426 Hemi 4-speed Bronze Daytona, truly one of the finest in the world. Tom Abrams of Reliable Carriers, Inc. will show his Spring Green 440 4-speed Daytona and our friends from Apex Motorsports will show the beautiful 426 Hemi Superbird they restored for owner Juergen Stanley. The Finer Details will be well represented with Bill Winkles amazing 426 Hemi 4-speed B5 Blue Charger 500. Other fine MCACN alumnus include Larry Weymouth's 440-6 barrel Superbird, Doug Schellinger’s 440-4 barrel Superbird, Daniel Liebrandt's original unrestored 440 Charger 500 and John & Linda Borzychs’ B5 Blue 440 Daytona, all shown with us in our Aero Warriors Invitational display in 2012. And of course, since the Aero Wars started with Ford and Mercury, we have Michael Troell & Julie Millers Bunkie Knudson (Yellow!) Talladega along with Carl Sharp's Deep Blue Talladega and we have Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II's, representing both versions with a Cale Yarborough and a Dan Gurney special. We have twelve Aero Cars coming in, so this alone is enough reason to join us!
Another group I put together is Postwar American 1960-1970. For this one, we have an even dozen cars that are ALL convertibles, with most having a bit of a performance twist. We kick off with the show-stopping 1960 Bonneville being shown by George Hanson, and Ken Nagel’s stunning black ‘62 Bonneville, (Ken bought this one at our show!) and both were MCACN “Going Topless” Invitational participants. The additional ten cars include a wild factory built Supercharged R2 Studebaker Lark, complete with Halibrand wheels, a ‘66 SS 427 Impala and a ‘67 427 SS, Rick Sach’s long and low ‘64 Lincoln Continental and Jerry Papesh’s ‘67 Grand Prix. Some of the cars that have not been to a previous MCACN show will be joining us this year!
Two additional smaller groups I worked on acknowledge the 50th Anniversary of the Mustang and also the GTO, and again, you will see several MCACN participants. In the GTO group, we have Magnum Auto Restoration joining us with the beautiful blue ‘66 that they premiered at MCACN last November, Denny and Pat Kloha with their red ‘67 that they bought brand new and our good friends Brian and Samantha Styles showing their ultra rare red on red GTO Judge Ram Air IV convertible, another “Going Topless” Invitational participant. For the Mustang group, we have just four, but they are all show stoppers, including the gleaming Phoenician Yellow ‘65 fastback that Jim Engel showed with us several years ago. This is just a sampling of what you will see among the 300+ vehicles on the grounds of the beautiful Inn at St. John in Plymouth, Michigan. We have an entire weekend of events going on, so consider this a personal invitation to join us. Check out www.concoursusa.org for all the information along with directions. Where else can you see prime American Muscle, SIX beautiful Model J Duesenberg’s along with some of the absolute finest Full Classics ever shown, Exotics ranging from the teens to 2014, Packards, Ferrari’s, Maserati’s, Pre 1916 motorcycles and also Drag bikes and so much more. Also of note; do you remember the amazing “Flip-Top” Cobra you saw at MCACN? Well...that will be there too! This is without a doubt an absolute must see event, no matter what kind of two or four wheeled vehicles you like.
MECUM HITS HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA; To say that Dana Mecum and his crew are on a roll is a major understatement. This week from the 24-26th they head to another brand new auction and as always, they are doing it in a BIG way. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania will host this one, with over 1,000 vehicles scheduled to cross the block. This is sure to be another great event for the Mecum Auctions team, so if you are in the market for something new to take to MCACN, head east! If you are unable to make it in person, head over to the Mecum website and register for the Mecum Infonet, where you can bid from your easy chair or just watch all the action. I am sure this is going to be another outstanding event!
Next week we will introduce you to our 2014 MCACN magazine cover girl and onsite Liaison, Addy S. Al Rogers/Freeze Frame Image, LLC shot Addy along with two of the most beautiful black Muscle Machines ever to come out of Dearborn at the Autobahnn in Joliet, Illinois. Both of the cars have never been shown in Chicago, and one literally came directly from the restoration shop. We were there when the owner saw it for the very first time after the extensive restoration, and let me just say, the smile on his face when the tailgate of the trailer dropped made me once again realize how much I love my job! Special thanks go out to Al along with Addy, Kenn Funk and Bob Frederick.
APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED; For both cars and vendors. We are close to sold out for Commercial A spots and the “big room” is almost full too. Response and registrations are coming in faster than ever, so if you are considering joining us, stop considering and send us your app! We are always looking for the best of the best, the rarest of the rare and quality examples of Factory Muscle and the coolest Corvettes. Whether your car is fresh from the barn or fresh from a restoration, if it is real and muscular, tell us about it. If you want to submit a car for consideration before filling out an official application, send photos by email to Bob Ashton at firstname.lastname@example.org. *
