PETE ESTES ONE OFF 1968 CONVERTIBLE FEATURED FOR MCACN Z/28 INVITATIONAL DISPLAY
We often talk about the rarity of some of the cars that are shown at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals each year. Many of these cars are rarely, if ever, seen by the public and we are truly honored to be able to play host to these historical automobiles. Each year, there are a few that truly stand out, which is a really strong statement considering what we have at the show! This year, we are pleased to present a very special car that is indeed the one and only,
a true One Off vehicle that has amazing history and provenance.
You see, back in 1968, Chevrolet Division General Manager and Vice President of GM, Pete Estes was somewhat of a “car guy” who loved convertibles. Estes also loved the new Z/28 that was introduced in 1967, but there was a slight problem. You see, the Z/28 was built to sell Chevy’s, tied in to the success of the Trans Am Race series, and being somewhat of a specialty car, it was never offered with a top that would go down. With Penske and Donahue dominating the series with their own Z/28’s, Estes knew it was an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the Camaro, and it worked. Since Estes always drove convertibles, (and those in the know felt that he needed to be seen in a Z/28), it was time to do a bit of internal creative ordering. The result is a truly one-off 1968 Camaro Z/28 that is loaded to the gills with every possible performance enhancing option that Chevrolet engineers could get their hands on, including many ‘69 parts that were still in development, AND a manual convertible top! Cross-ram manifold with dual 4-barrels; check! JL8 four-wheel disc brakes; check! a massaged 302 engine, with all the good stuff inside; check! a special cowl induction hood, (to be later seen on ‘69 Z/28’s); check! front and rear sway bars with special Chevrolet/Koni shocks; check...and the list goes on and on. And since Estes also liked his creature comforts, they would also throw in a long list of other goodies including power windows, center console with gauges and even a rear window defogger, (remember, Estes was in the Detroit area!) The car would serve as his daily driver for about a year, when it was then released and sold. After being bounced around a bit, it ended up in the collection of prominent Detroit area collector Al Maynard. Al knew what he had, and although the car was missing many of the key components, he was able to dig deep into his own collection and would also call in some favors from his many connections to bring the car back as it once was when Estes was behind the wheel. I knew Al quite well, and had the opportunity to get a personal tour of the car years ago. Although I must admit, I was somewhat skeptical of its history, after talking to Al and seeing the many one-off features, I was indeed not only impressed, but amazed. This car really is a One off COPO creation, unlike no other!
For the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show this year, we are hosting a very special gathering of Chevy’s Z/28’s. All of the cars in the display represent the best of the best and the rarest of the rare. This 1968 Z/28 convertible, the only Z/28 convertible ever built until 1987, will be the centerpiece of this collection. Currently owned by our Title Sponsor Dana Mecum, we are honored to be able to present this incredible piece of Chevrolet Camaro history for your viewing pleasure, November 23-24, 2013 when we return to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, (greater Chicago), Illinois. This Z/28 will be surrounded by some of the finest Z’s that are coming in from across the country. You will see examples ranging from the inaugural year of 1967 on up, including several other prime examples from Dana’s personal collection.
This week we are headed to the huge Ford Carlisle Nationals . I will again be looking for the best of the best and the rarest of the rare, and I know I will find them in Carlisle! This is one of the largest All Ford specialty events in the world and with several thousand cars expected, it is a must see. In addition to the wide variety of Ford products, they also have a huge swap meet and some excellent food. Oh...they also have a Miss Carlisle Ford contest on Saturday! Hope to see you there and as always, if you are attending and want to hook up to talk about the upcoming Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show, please give me a call at 586-549-5291.
